The camel has two humps ( working title )

چکیده

Learning to program is notoriously difficult. A substantial minority of students fails in every introductory programming course in every UK university. Despite great academic effort, the proportion has increased rather than decreased over the years, and despite a great deal of research into teaching methods and student responses, we have no idea of the cause. It has long been suspected that some people have a natural aptitude for programming, but until now there has been no psychological test which could detect it. It is not correlated with age, with gender, or with educational attainment; nor is it correlated with any of the aptitudes measured in conventional ‘intelligence’ or ‘problem-solving-ability’ tests. We have found a test for programming aptitude, of which we give details. Remarkably, we can predict success or failure even before students have had any contact with any programming language, and with total accuracy. We present statistical analyses to prove the latter point. We speculate that programming teaching is therefore ineffective for those who are bound to fail and pointless for those who are bound to succeed.

Camel sequences and quadratic residues

Given an even cyclic (+1; 1) sequence s = (s0; :::; s2n 1) which consists of n plus ones and n minus ones, let us compute i+ j (mod 2n) for all n2 (+1; 1)-pairs (si; sj) and distribute obtained n2 numbers between 2n "boxes" 1; 2; :::; 2n 1; 2n = 0 (mod 2n). The average cardinality of a box is n2 2n = n2 . Some sequences have quite remarkable box-distributions, "almost average everywhere with tw...

Effects of leukotriene receptor antagonists on vascular endothelial growth factor levels in asthma.

I thank Dr. Cole for focusing on a figure I recently published in CHEST (August 2004).1 However, I totally disagree with his comments. Dr. Cole claims that the time interval between the two peaks of the so-called camel transpulmonary thermodilution curve (with two humps) that was presented in my article is “much too short” to mimic a right-to-left intracardiac shunt. When the camel curve is due...

The Effect of Speed Humps on Highways Pavement Condition

Speed humps used as a tool of traffic calming technique that applied to force drivers to reduce their vehicle’ speeds at some locations. For developed countries, the implementations of speed humps are often used within residential areas as well as at locations of schools crossing.  For developing countries (e.g. Iraq), speed humps are used even at urban and urban highways.   This paper investig...

Simulating the Effect of Speed Humps on the U-Turn Traffic

Traffic simulation represents an effective tool for evaluating the suggested alternatives to enhance traffic conditions prior to their application in real sites. U-turn sections represent examples of the complicated sections that cannot be analyzed properly without applying microsimulation approach.  Recently, in Iraq, speed humps were applied in prior to the merging locations and U-turn sectio...
